Q&A #10 Barnet?
Haircut 100
Hi Nigel, What’s the hair care regime? Will you share?
Thanks,
Nicky
‘Thanks Nicky and nice to hear from you.
I do get asked and to be honest I remain glad that I do. I’m never blasé about having hair, particularly at my age, where in some of the circles I move in having a full head of hair is rare like having hen’s teeth or as prevalent as a £10k follicle implant receipt.
I think as a youngster I got to know my barnet well. Especially as my dear mother’s dressmaking skills (professionally employed as such) didn’t transfer to the casual coiffure of my mind’s eye. To say mater would casually create, cut and sew a stunning wedding dress would be an understatement. Ladies would travel from afar to avail themselves of a talent unseen outside of London or Paris*. To say that she would cut my hair, purely as a necessity and doing just that in the shortest time possible - would also be an understatement. See above…
I’ve had it long, permed, highlighted, cropped, layered, faded, dyed, mulleted, wedged and feathered. Yet, it always returns to this. I must be lucky with my crown(s) and my widow’s peak is a none issue for me now which it wasn’t as a 16 year old rutting stag. The onset of male pattern baldness was a big thing to me then, I don’t know why as Dad and Grandad both had a full complement, as did my brother (then).
Then, as now, it is quite a simple process for me. Washed daily in the morning invariably with Head & Shoulders 2 in 1
‘I didn’t know you had dandruff?
‘I don’t…
It works for me so I use it, if I’m empty I will pinch some of Ali’s posh stuff - though to be honest for the premium that ladies pay it doesn’t work for me. Pink tax I think they call it…
Ultimately my Dad religiously used Lifebuoy soap (yes to wash his hair) and he could do no wrong. He’d also use Brylcreem yet that’s another matter altogether.
Ablutions? Essentially, I’m a ‘wash n go’ kind of guy. The shower being the host for a shampoo and shave. Yes, I’ve been doing it that long a blind shave is a pleasure/art not to be underestimated.
Towel dried barnet, along with everything else, and away we go. Moisturiser, underarm and aftershave done - I can leave the house, not before getting dressed naturally.
Depending where we are in the four week cycle there might be some ‘product’ going on there, largely to quieten down the sides and temper the grown out fuzz. Without looking at the diary I can sense another trip to Scott or the Barbers when no amount of wax or paste does the job.
Current reflections are that I’m not grey enough, ultimately I’d like to be as white as my grandfather, Fred. Perhaps not right now, though certainly one day.
Hope that’s useful
Best
Nigel
* Okay, I wax(!) lyrical and I accept that. However, as a lasting memory I can picture her under a mountain of lace with needle and thimble always.
